ABOUT THE MERCADO CLAUSTRO DEL CARMEN

The Mercado Claustro del Carmen was built in the 18th century next to the church of the same name. However, it lost its religious use during the Disentailment and today its walls and courtyard accommodate all kinds of cultural activities as well as a market.

The Claustro del Carmen is attached to the north façade of the church. It is a three-storey square building built made of limestone. After the Disentailment (1835) it was used as a prison, court building and market.

Nowadays, after the reform carried out in the 1990s, it houses the gastronomic market on the ground floor, where a great variety of traditional products of the island can be found. In the central part of the courtyard, in the open air, there is a varied musical programme with a variety of concerts by both national and international artists. Finally, the upper floor houses a variety of cultural uses and exhibitions.
