The perfect place to do your summer shopping

One of the Balearic Islands’ summer attractions is its picturesque and colourful open-air markets, held both day and night. Meeting places for artisans, artists, local food producers and small traders, where you can often enjoy live music performances and a tempting variety of cuisine. Markets are also held on important dates such as the days leading up to Christmas - an excellent opportunity to find some unique gifts.

During the summer, all the islands hold seasonal open-air markets featuring handicrafts made by artisans from the islands and all around the world. In Mallorca, from May to October, you can enjoy the markets which open at dusk in coastal localities such as Port d'Alcúdia, Peguera, Santa Ponça, Magaluf, Palmanova, Cala Rajada, S'Estanyol, S'Illot, Platja de Muro, Port de Pollença, Sa Coma, Cala Egos, Cala d'Or and Porto Petro.

In Palma, during the same period, you can visit the craft market in the Plaça Major or take a stroll among the stalls in the shade of the Cathedral, in the Paseo Sagrera and S'Hort des Rei, to browse the creations of the many artisans.

During the days leading up to Christmas, there are small handicraft markets in Majorcan towns such as Campanet, Esporles, Felanitx, Porto Cristo, Palma and Sencelles. In Palma, Christmas stalls take over the Plaça Major, where you can buy hand-painted clay figurines from the traditional Majorcan nativity scene.  The city also holds craft markets where you can buy unique gifts from stalls in the Plaça d'Espanya and the Rambla.

Menorca is also host to numerous summer markets that attract tourists and travellers from all over the world. Usually open from May to October, they are held in places such as Cala En Porter, Cales Fonts, Ciutadella, Ferreries, Maó, Fornells, Es Mercadal, Punta Prima and Sant Lluís. There you can find traditional products such as albarcas - traditional Minorcan leather shoes - as well as T-shirts, jewellery, glassware and leather goods, handkerchiefs, bags and accessories, and works by local artists.

Ibiza is famous throughout the world for its tradition of ‘hippy markets’, some dating back to the 1960s. The best known is Las Dalias, open all year round but with special events in summer and at Christmas. Also worth a visit are the Es Canà street market in Punta Arabí, open from April to October, and the markets of tourist resorts such as Sant Antoni, Platja d'En Bossa and Ses Figueretes.

In Formentera, the craft market of La Mola is open every Wednesday and Sunday from May to October, offering live music as well as stalls selling handicrafts. There you can find original works of art and handmade souvenirs of the island. And the village of Sant Ferran holds a craft market at sunset every day of the summer except Wednesdays and Sundays.
