Algaida, Artà, Felanitx, Manacor and Sineu are all villages with a long-lasting relationship with wine - an essential ingredient in popular festivities and family celebrations. Thirteen wineries and nearly seventy wine-growers produce wines underthe PlaiLlevant DO - red, white, rosé, sparkling, fortified and semi-sparkling wine.

The vines grow practically at sea level in a distinctively Mediterranean landscape, where they benefit from the gentle sea breezes. Production of these wines uses local white varieties such as Premsal Blanc and Giró Ros, and the red varieties Callet, Manto Negro, Fogoneu and Gorgollassa.

Vines have been cultivated in this area since the time of Roman rule. But the golden age for local wine was the 19th century, when the Great French Wine Blight decimated production in France, and wine had to be imported from Spain and Italy. Unfortunately, the phylloxera aphid behind the Blight found its way to Mallorca, causing most vines to perish. Today, the sector has again reached a crucial point, where new vineyards have been planted, new varieties and improved cultivation techniques have been introduced and significant investments in technology have been made, all of which enable increased production and better quality wines.

You can find PlaiLlevant DO wines in Mallorca’s best shops, bars and restaurants. As well as a perfect accompaniment to a good meal, you can drink it as an aperitif, together with tapas made from local olives.
