Local producer OBRA NEGRA

The passion of Pere Mas Roig for wine, family tradition and his training as an agricultural engineer was bound to end up this way: producing his own wine. It’s a red, it has Vi de la Terra de Mallorca classification, it comes from the lands of a centuries-old possessió and it’s called Obra Negra. You’ll find Pere and his wine in Maria de la Salut (Mallorca).

Pere Mas started making wine in 2005, experimenting and enjoying the results. His passion is something that runs in the family, as his parents also made their own family wine. As occurs in many Mallorca households, at first it was just for their own consumption. But in 2010 he decided to take things a step further and professionalise what he was doing by releasing his wine onto the market.

His half-hectare of vineyards forms part of the former possessió of Roqueta, a historic area of land from the 13th century, as together with another six plots it was a gift from King James I to the seven noblemen who served with him during the conquest of Mallorca in 1229.

The red wine Obra Negra is produced following traditional farming methods, which means harvesting and selecting the grapes completely by hand, and involving a meticulous production process. The wine falls under the Protected Geographical Indication of Vi de la Terra de Mallorca.

Accompanying Pere Mas on this adventure is his wife, María Isabel Oliver, and his father, Joan Mas Ferriol. He admits to being very satisfied with the end result achieved with Obra Negra. And it seems to go down well among his customers, most of whom are neighbours and residents in Maria de la Salut. What do they like most about it? That it’s a local product, made so close to them, and is of such high quality.
