Canyamel Tower was built (13th century) as a defence and watch tower for the local village. It has been a museum and centre of events and artistic exhibitions since 2009.
This is one of the most noteworthy defence towers in Majorca. Moorish in origin, its development is tied to the conquest of Majorca by Jaume I (13 century).
The tower was built to guard and provide shelter from the frequent incursions of corsairs and invaders. It consists of three floors and a 23-m turret in the middle. It offers excellent views of the Bay of Canyamel and the surrounding countryside of Capdepera, Artà and Son Severa.
When sugarcane was first planted (second half of the 15th century), the structure changed its original name (Torre d'en Montsó) to Canyamel.
