Tools and utensils from traditional life of the inhabitants of Formentera
Until tourism discovered Formentera and became its main source of income, the island was a poor, marginal territory with a strong cultural personality. This museum features elements that attest to that traditional lifestyle.
Opened in 1993 under private ownership. In 2000, with the Services facing the possibility of closure, an agreement was signed between the different government institutions on the islands (Government of the Balearic Islands, Island Council and Council of Formentera) with the intention of keeping the exhibition space open until the future Museum of Formentera became a reality.
The Ethnographic Museum of Formentera, located in the centre of the town of Sant Francesc Xavier, has a permanent display of the traditional tools and utensils used by the inhabitants of this small Balearic island. It gives the visitor a glimpse of life on Formentera before the tourists arrived.
Its 100 m2 of surface is distributed into a single room on the top floor and an indoor courtyard where we can see one of the engines of the saltworks train.
