Enjoy contemporary art in one of the oldest chapels in the historic centre of Palma de Mallorca
The feature that perhaps best characterises the Kewenig Gallery is the space in which it exhibits the works of the artists it supports: the Oratori de Sant Feliu, one of the oldest chapels in the Balearic capital, built a few years after its conquest by King James I in the 13th century.
In this ancient space of spiritual meditation, works by both established artists and new emerging generations are displayed. The programme includes Marcelo Viquez, Sean Scully, Bernardí Roig, photographer Seydou Keita and Sandra Vásquez de la Horra, among many others.
The roots of the Kewenig Gallery date back to 1986 in Frechen, a small town near Cologne (Germany). Founded by Michael O. Kewenig, it thrived by balancing contributions from established artists with others from local artists within the arte povera movement, a movement that generally used simple materials such as straw, sand, stones, fallen leaves, metal fragments or glass.
Today, the second generation of the Kewenig family runs the galleries in Palma and Berlin. While Jule Kewenig is in charge of the Palma site, Justus F. Kewenig manages the Berlin site. Their gallery is a regular at international meetings and important contemporary art events.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 12.00 pm to 8.00 pm, and Saturdays from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm.
