Can Catlar
This house was built in 1556, by order of captain Pere Abrí-Descatlar, Philip II of Spain’s “Maestro de Campo” (chief of staff). The highlight of this building is the Renaissance-style façade which marks an extraordinary example of sculptural wall decoration. Despite the fact that some of the Renaissance-style patio still remains, successive renovations were carried from the 18th to the 20th century.
From 1442 onwards, the Seca de Mallorca was housed here (the Mallorcan Mint). This privilege was granted by Alfonso V of Aragon, who also awarded Pere Abrí-Descatlar i de Santacoloma with the title of Lord of the Bossa d’Or . Minting activity continued to take place here under the management of the same family until 1787.
