Liquid gold from the Mallorcan countryside
The quality of Majorcan oil was already being praised in the 19th century by Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria. He used it as a dressing for his fresh vegetable dishes and, of course, to spread on his bread with tomatoes, one of the most simple and tastiest dishes when the ingredients are top quality.
You can find out how Majorcan oil is made from direct sales producers such as Aubocassa, Olíric and Oli Novembre. They all produce extra virgin olive oil with the Designation of Origin Oli de Mallorca.
Aubocassa, a historic estate in Manacor, has its own oil mill and takes care of the entire production process from manual harvesting of the olives to final bottling.
The guided tour and olive oil tasting are suitable for all ages. The tour is currently given in Catalan, Spanish, French and English. It includes a guided tour of the oil mill to see the production process up close, a walk through the estate’s olive grove and tasting its extra virgin olive oils: Aubocassa and L’amo. You can supplement this tasting by adding three wines and pa amb oli (bread with oil, garlic and tomatoes), or three premium wines plus the prized Majorcan pa amb oli (Vilafranca bread, and Can Company sausage specialities and Flor de Sal d’es Trenc salt).
The municipality of Santa Eugènia is the home of the Ses Rotes estate where Miquel Coll Crespí produces Olíric, an organic extra virgin olive oil, using the olive varieties arbequina and koroneiki. Strolling around its olive grove, with over 1,500 trees, is always a pleasant experience. Although they don’t have their own mill, visits include oil tasting and can be arranged on their website or over the phone.
Lastly, in Petra, there is a family estate called Son Elsebitx where they produce Organic Oli Novembre, made 100% from arbequina olives. If you want to visit the estate and enjoy an oil tasting, please contact Guillem Mas and his daughter Marta, who will be pleased to welcome you and prepare a good pa amb oli.
