A historical ensemble protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural
Small village, or ‘llogaret’ declared a Bien de Interés Cultural with the category of a historical ensemble, and located very close to the town of Santa Eugènia. Its name comes from the handcrafting tradition of popular pottery manufacture.
This town is located slightly more than one kilometre away from the town of Santa Eugènia, and it has grown mainly through the manufacture of pottery, hence its name (‘olleria’ is Catalan for ‘pottery’). Manufacturers specialised in non-refined pieces for the use of the people, namely pots, cups and kitchen utensils. According to oral tradition, nowadays the modern Portòl workshops are the ones that keep this pottery tradition alive.
The use of red clay, which is easily manageable and workable and not very permeable, have been critical for the importance of this area, and are the reason behind the human settlements that have populated the area for centuries.
