Local producer S'HORT DE CAN JAUME

Margalida Munar is the person in charge of S’hort de Can Jaume, in Algaida (Mallorca). She has been growing and selling seasonal fruit and vegetables for 30 years, following in the footsteps, in her own way, of the family business that her parents started when she was a youngster. “I’ve been involved in the countryside all my life.”

The most characteristic colour at S’hort de Can Jaume is green – all the green vegetables you can imagine: spinach, parsley, cabbage, lettuce, peas... along with all the colours of the fruit in season at any given time.

That’s because Margalida has a real passion for vegetables, much than for cows, which her father used to work with on the estate, as on so many other fincas in Mallorca.

It was this passion for the land that convinced Margalida to give up her job in administration and, together with her husband, take over from her father at S’hort de Can Jaume, replacing animals with vegetables.

Growing fruit and vegetables has given her an advantage in terms of the land, as in a limited amount of space she is able to grow plenty of produce and diversify her range. S’hort de Can Jaume is a small farm, around 7.5 hectares, bordered by the village of Algaida and the road.

The best thing about direct sales for Margalida is that it is authentic – “truly from the field”, and that it is “straight from producer to consumer”. She particularly enjoys inviting customers to come and walk around the land where she grows her produce. It’s the best way for them to see how she manages her crops and to be sure that no chemical processes or other forms of manipulation are involved before the produce reaches their tables.
