A venue for culture
The theatre occupies the plot where the Casa de Comedias (House of comedies) used to be, opened in 1662 and torn down in 1854.
The new theatre was built in 1857 with such bad luck that one year after it was opened the building was destroyed in a fire. The restoration got underway immediately with the same architects and criteria as the first one, and it was opened in 1860. It was refurbished in 1895, adding a new floor to the main body of the façade. The building’s latest remodelling was finished in 2007.
The façade today actually serves as a curtain wall and does not correspond with the floors; it is arranged into three parts. The relief on the pediment bearing mythological motifs stands out, as do the seven muses designed by Ricard Anckermann and sculpted by Llorenç Ferrer.
