Formentera is ideal for cycling. Short distances, great weather all year round and winding through 32 green routes, most of which are entirely suitable for two-wheelers. Discover incredible landscapes, hidden coves, breathtaking cliffs and the best sunsets without emitting a single gram of CO2.

From La Savina to Sant Francesc, 23 minutes. From Sant Francesc to Sant Ferran, 10 minutes. From Sant Ferran to Illetes beach, 26 minutes. This is the time it will take you to cycle around some of the most important points on Formentera. On this Balearic island, the distances are so short that it is worth going green and using this means of transport. Moreover, entering the Ses Salines Natural Park is free of charge for bicycles.

In fact, Formentera is fully prepared and offers a safe and comfortable environment for those who choose to cycle. The island is practically flat and pedalling is almost effortless, except in the area of La Mola, where you may have to put your legs to the test for a while. However, when you arrive and admire the incredible view of the whole island from this elevated area, you will understand that it will have been worth it.

Although the distances in Formentera are short, there are 32 green routes, which stretch for more than 100 kilometres to cycle around the island's countryside, admire its propped fig trees, feel the scent of the Mediterranean pine trees in the sun and take in the sea breeze in its impressive coves and cliffs. Below is a teaser of some of its most emblematic routes.

Route 32: an island on an island

Starting with route 32, the longest route on the island, but which reveals a great variety of landscapes: lush pine forests, vineyards and coastal areas with breathtaking views of cliffs and panoramic views of the whole island. This is a circular route that crosses El Pla de la Mola and runs along a number of very old historical paths that have never been altered.

This is an easy route for cycling. It's just over 12 kilometres and 70 metres of elevation gain can be covered in just over an hour; however, with the amount of things to see and do, it can fill a whole day. It passes by the main attractions of La Mola, such as the lighthouse, the picturesque white church of El Pilar, the Terramoll winery and the craft market that is held on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from May to October. Route 32 offers the opportunity to discover the true essence of the island.

Cycle through the most rural part of Formentera

We encourage you to choose route 8, which runs from Sant Francesc to the Cap de Barbaria lighthouse, to discover the most arid and rural Formentera. The route is 9.6 kilometres long, medium difficulty and with a gentle gradient of 73 metres. Over the course of one hour, you will be immersed in the authentic rural Formentera, with cultivated fields of almond trees, vineyards and fig trees separated by dry stonewalls. This route alternates between rural scenery and wooded serenity, until you reach the arid landscape, with low bushes of rosemary and thyme. In the midst of this almost lunar panorama, the white lighthouse of Cap de Barbaria rises majestically.

Formentera is ideal for cycling all year round. In fact, several sporting events are held during the off-peak tourist months to enjoy the island while touring it on two wheels, such as the Vuelta Cicloturista a Formentera en BTT (MTB Tour of Formentera). Come and visit us on two wheels at any time of the year!
