Cultural heritage in Ibiza

Ibiza, known as the "white island" for its characteristic smooth white architecture, is a paradise for lovers of history and culture. Ibiza, the largest of the Pitiusas (Ibiza and Formentera), has a rich cultural heritage with vestiges throughout its geography. The old Renaissance wall with its seven bastions embraces Dalt Vila, the true heart of Eivissa. With a reputation as the best-preserved coastal fortress in the Mediterranean, the citadel is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it contains houses, the Cathedral of Santa María de las Nieves, the Plaza de la Vila and the Mirador del Rey Jaume I viewpoint, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Eivissa. An unmissable spot to visit and discovering the local and international creative explosion that has been happening here since the 1960s. The defensive towers dotted around the island were built in the 16th century to protect it from marauding pirates. Nowadays, many of these towers have been restored and are open to visitors. One of these is the Torre des Savinar in the natural park of Es Vedrà, which affords impressive panoramic views over the Mediterranean Sea and the cliffs. Ibiza also has an important artistic and musical heritage. The island is famous for its festivals and cultural events, such as the Ibiza Medieval Fair and the Ibiza Music Festival, which attracts musicians and fans of the performing arts from all over the world. Ibiza is a landmark for its cultural heritage, from ancient walls and defensive towers, to its cosmopolitan side as a centre of creativity, with examples of the Bauhaus movement and Dadaism.
