Discover one of the star products of the Menorcan countryside and savour its special properties in exclusive small-production wineries
Menorca has been a land of wine since ancient times. We know that its production here dates back to Roman times, doubling during the British occupation and reaching its peak during the 19th century. However, after the Civil War it practically disappeared. As democracy took root, so did vines in the Menorcan countryside and the island resumed its production. Visit its charming wineries, which are traditionally produced and fully integrated into the landscape.
There has been a progressive revival of the wine-making tradition in Menorca. In 2002, it obtained the protected geographical indication 'Vi de la Terra Illa de Menorca', which guarantees the quality and origin of the island’s wines. Its red wines stand out for their bright purple colour and spicy and fruits of the forest aroma, made with red varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Syrah and Tempranillo. Its white wines are refreshing, light, fruity and even with floral notes, made using white varieties Chardonnay, Macabeo, Malvasía, Moscatel de Alejandría, Parellada and Moll.
At present, the geographical indication covers 10 wineries producing wines of outstanding quality. Some of these can be visited in small groups and when booking in advance, while others organise guided tours and tastings of local produce. Taste Menorca through its wines!
