Enjoy the finest wines with a taste of the Mediterranean
In the Balearic Islands there are hundreds of different wines. Wine production on the islands began in Roman times when low and trained vines were grown. Despite the major crisis that occurred throughout Europe, including Mallorca, when the phylloxera plague arrived at the end of the 19th century and vineyards were destroyed, this ancient production has continued.
Over the years, families revived the wine tradition motivated, above all by their passion. Many homes still produce their own wine for self-consumption. Families such as Mesquida Mora and Galmés i Ribot have been looking after vines and making wine for several generations. At the winery Bodega Son Puig, Raimundo Alabern, an agricultural engineering technologist by profession and a winemaker at heart, began producing wine in the 21st century at a historic estate whose splendour has been restored. Another agricultural engineer, Pere Mas Roig switched from being a hobbyist to selling his black labour, and in Es Gallicant, they launched into the venture motivated by the family agricultural tradition.
Visiting the wineries is a must. Each has its own particular features setting it apart from the others, but you can learn far more about wine in Mallorca from them all.
The winery Mesquida Mora in Porreres organises visits for all ages. In the Santa Margalida area you can find the wineries Galmés and Ribot. Both offer a guided tour around the estate’s facilities with tasting of all the products. The tour is available in English, Catalan, Spanish and German and lasts approximately 90 minutes. Booking is essential.

Paraphrasing Pliny the Elder, a Roman soldier and naturalist from the 1st century, “In vino veritas”, the truth lies in wine. Enjoy its culture.
